The Origins Behind Our West African Indigo Hand-Dyed Indigo Scarves
At Blackhorse Lane Ateliers, we believe that true luxury is a harmonious blend of quality artisanal craftsmanship, community values, and eco-friendly practices. It is with great excitement that we unveil our latest project – a collection of unique hand-dyed indigo cotton scarves, bringing to you exceptional pieces with a story.
Crafted with Purpose and Passion
Our journey begins in Morocco, where our Creative Director / Owner Hat Ates sourced vintage fabrics during a recent adventure. Each scarf, a one-of-a-kind masterpiece, showcases the rich tapestry of West African traditional patterns, celebrating cultural diversity and artistry. To add an extra layer of significance, we've utilised indigo Ikat offcuts from our recent EC2 Overshirt, to patch and mend certain sections of these scarves, which will also fade and age overtime just like the original fabric.
This vintage fabric, originally woven by skilful weavers using handmade 12-inch looms, tells a story of meticulous craftsmanship. These scarves are more than accessories; they are wearable stories, handcrafted with love, skill, and a nod to the age-old traditions of artisanal fabric creation.
The Intricate Art of Mud and Stitch-Resisting Printing
The origin artistry which brings these scarves to life, is a fascinating mud and stitch-resisting printing technique. With a wooden block, artisans meticulously apply a mixture of mud and tree gum to the fabric before indigo dyeing. During the indigo dipping, the mud resists the dye, creating distinctive patterns. After the dyeing process, the mud and stitches are carefully removed, revealing the scarf's original base colour and the unique story it tells.
A Touch of London Love
Ensuring the scarves are as special as can be, we brought them to our London atelier for meticulous patching and repairs. This process not only enhances their longevity but also adds a personal touch of love and care to each piece. We believe in creating connections – between you and our products, and between communities around the world.
Our commitment goes beyond creating beautiful scarves; it extends to fostering a community of like-minded individuals who appreciate the artistry and values behind every piece. With each purchase, you become a part of this narrative, connecting with the hands that crafted your scarf and the stories woven into its fabric.
We take pride in crafting pieces that not only reflect style and elegance but also embrace eco-friendly practices. Our hand-dyed indigo scarves are a celebration of eco-friendly fashion, where quality meets consciousness.
