One Ear Brand brings us another bandana design, this time inspired by the trade blankets of American history and, more specifically, the work of Esmond Mills from Rhode Island.

Trade blankets have long been associated with the American West, with designs drawing influence from Native American weaving, basketry and beadwork traditions. Their patterns have become an enduring part of American material culture.

For this design, Yurika and One Ear Brand took an Esmond Mills blanket as their starting point, then played with the colours to create something of their own. Matcha green, indigo blues and rusty reds bring a distinctly Japanese colour palette to a design rooted in American history.

We particularly like that meeting of influences. Japanese colour and craft, American history and the everyday appeal of a good bandana.

    The One / Two Ears Brand is the brainchild of Jonathan Lukacek who has been obsessing over bandannas for over a decade and husband and wife power duo Ryo and Hiro who make up the denim cult brand Ooe Yofukuten. 

    The partnership between three individuals is fascinating as they dig into the archives of bandanna designs from the 1890s to early 1900s and truly obsess over each detail and creative decision from the type of cotton, to how the bandannas are woven (two selvedge edges which are a play on the name of the brand). Finally the hand printing of each bandanna makes these the best bandanna's that you can find anywhere and we don't say that lightly.
