At Blackhorse Lane Ateliers, we’ve long relied on Ernest Wright scissors and shears in our workshop for their precision, balance, and enduring quality — tools we trust daily in the making of our jeans and garments.
Each pair of 8.25″ Dressmaker shears begins as two solid bars of carbon steel, hot-forged in Sheffield using a traditional die pattern recently unearthed and restored by Ernest Wright. The result is a beautifully engineered tool that cuts cleanly and feels purposeful in hand.
Now available in our store, each pair comes with a handcrafted suede pouch to keep them protected for years of use.

The company’s makers, known locally as “putter-togetherers,” carefully match, grind, and balance every blade by hand, ensuring a precision cut and a tool built to last a lifetime. Their work continues Sheffield’s proud heritage of steelworking and fine cutlery, preserving a craft that has all but disappeared elsewhere.
Today, Ernest Wright stands as one of the last remaining handcraft scissor makers in the world, producing tools that embody patience, skill, and enduring British quality.
